Dr. Dov J Berkowitz | On PBS’ “The Art of Aging”, a number of Japanese centenarians – people who are 100 years or older – are interviewed. But unlike most centenarians their old age, these people are independent. One of the interviewees, named Saburo Shoochi, live alone and still actively participates and contribtutes to the local child care. Ryohei Omiya broke the record for 100m dash in his age group. Gin Sato still actively teaches how to play japanese musical instrument. And lastly, Keizo Miura, still actively ski down the European Alps!
What’s their secret? That was the objective of the interviews and the studies. Brain scans showed their brains are approximately 30 years younger than they should be… but could genetics be the reason for this “miracle”? The answer is yes, genetic played a role, though it’s smaller than you might think.
Dr. Dov J Berkowitz | One of the elderly interviewed, at one point in his life, could not walk, was depressed and could barely without assistance… until he rediscovered his passion (which I will reveal later in this article). In this article, I want to introduce you to their secrets, and know that the things that matters most in life are often times… simple. So don’t shrug these suggestions as simplistic, because they can change your life if adopted.
- The first secret is to keep your brain engaged. One of the interviewees started learning the Korean language at approximately age 60… and began learning Chinese at 94! Studies have shown that the more information is required to be memorized, the more your brain will grow new neurons.
- Keep an active lifestyle. The person who broke the 100m dash record walked every single day for a few miles… at the age of 98!
- Perform brain exercises. All these centenarians proved, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that your brain can change and improve. One of the best ways to train your brain is to perform brain exercises. Just like learning a language, brain exercises challenges the brain and stimulates the growth of new neurons.
